The Lincoln Public Schools was awarded a federal grant Teaching American History in August 2010 to cover three years of professional development for teachers. Over fifty teachers in twelve districts are receiving professional development to improve their content knowledge and develop lessons to increase student’s understanding of United States history. The goals of this $934,587.00 project, A New Birth of Freedom are as follows:

- To increase teachers’ content knowledge and understanding of traditional American history as a separate subject.
- To strengthen the teaching of traditional American history as a separate academic subject and implement improved pedagogical methods for American history, including developing a thematic and document-based approach to teach American history.
- To improve student performance in traditional American history content and historical thinking.
